1991 HALFTIME REPORT

We’ve reached the halfway point of the season and it’s time to look back at the first three months of the seventh seaso= n of SPBV.

American League East

Maybe this division should be renamed the Q division s= ince they’ve been so dominant the past few years. Once more Quigley finds themselves= on top with a comfortable 8 game lead over the perennial bridesmaid Black Swamp and disappointing Lafayette at 9 back. The Q’s are missing the lights out pitching that they’ve enjoyed the past few sea= sons but they are scoring on a pace to reach 800 runs despite low homerun totals(lots of doubles and good o= nbase are driving the scoring). The Salamanders are held back by a league average team hitting and seem to be riding a decent pitching staff to a winning record.

Lafayette= ’s league worst offense is being dragged down heavily by = Wil Clark and Mel Hall, two guys expected to put more runs on the board. Greg Maddux has disappointed everyone on the mound.&nb= sp; Scio, Carolina and Lake Superior ha= ve all hovered around .500 but will play a tougher schedule in the second half goi= ng up against a lot of good AL teams. However, Chris Sabo(Farmers), John Kruk(W= hitecaps) and Frank Thomas and Barry Larkin(Red Sox) are all providing much joy in th= eir cities.

American League West

This race provides and interesting matchup of three distinctive styles of play. Three games separate Brooklyn, Baltimore and Frankfort. The front running Bridegrooms have= the leagues best pitching staff highlighted by the amazing 16-3 of Tom Glavine and perhaps the leagues best bullpen. The Redbirds feature a lineup that thrives on a good mix of onbase and speed with = a dash of power. The Hot Dogs bludge= on opponents and have a league leading 130 homers, 49 more than second best Chicago. Caveats-Brooklyn has one the league’s worst offenses, Baltimore h= as some weak spots in the rotation and Frankfort has the leagues second worst pitching.&nbs= p; Like the AL East Pitcairn, Chicago and Pandora have feasted on the weaker NL to all stay near .500. Here comes the hard part with AL games aplenty.

National League East

Although Kitsilano leads <= st1:place w:st=3D"on">Trenton by 4 games= they are statiscally equal teams. Kitsilano has scored 3 more runs and given up 7 more than Trenton. .002 difference in BA, .004 difference in= OBA, Trenton has more h= omers but Kitilano has more doubles and stolen bases.= They have the best two ERA’s in the league. This one probably goes to the wire= .

Last years NL champ Niskayuna has fallen 10 games under .500 and will have to start thinking about the 19= 92 campaign soon. Cleveland will do likewise while Rockbridge and Atlantic City are legitimate candidates for the overall #1 = pick(Mike Piazza?) in next year’s draft.

National League West

Red Bluff has banked identical 10-3 seasons by David C= one and Andy Benes and a solid offense, built around good = onbase, to a 5 game cushion over Kans= as. After solid seasons in 88 an= d 89, the Roughriders slipped below .500 in a disappointing 1990 campaign. They seem to have the elements in = place to capture their first title. Jack Morris(11-3) and Ken Griffey, Jr.(16 homers) are driving the Storm in their efforts improve on last years= 85 win campaign. Defending divis= ional champ Wabash and Beard are within striki= ng distance, but, probably don’t have the offensive firepower to play catchup. New Jersey and Cedar Rapids now turn their attention next year.
