AME= RICAN LEAGUE EAST

 

BLA= CK SWAMP--The Salamanders league best 22-6 record included a 14-2 road record....On 4/11 Jody Reed scored 5 runs against Ruppert.  Reed singled, walked three times a= nd was hit by a pitch, scoring each time on base....Dave Parker drove in 5 = in the same game....Bruce Hurst hurled 2 April shutouts against Knoxvil= le and Kitsilano...Black Swamp was 8-1 in games in which Kevin Mitchell homered....Sam Horn had a walk-off pinch hit homer versus Cedar Rapi= ds on 4/11.  Horn also pinch hit = a game winning homer in the top of the 10th versus Knoxville six days later...Mitc= hell was thrown out twice at home versus Ruppert on 4/11.

 

LAF= AYETTE-The Colt All-Stars allowed a league low 80 runs in April...Lafayette was a sharp 9-3 versus lefties....Chili Davis and Jay Bell both had two 4= -hit games....On 4/18 against Red Bluff Randy Johnson's line was 9-2-0-0-2-12.  He struckout Wa= de Boggs three times!....Nolan Ryan leads the league with 58 strikeouts, including two 10+ K games....The Big Unit is second with 51...Johnson and <= b>Greg Maddux both lead the league in wins at 5-1.  They're tied with the Salamanders = Ron Darling.

 

QUI= GLEY-On 4/7 Dave Henderson had a walkoff homer versus Cleveland....On 4/25 against Wabash, Brian Giles was 4 for 5 with a homer and double....On 4/15 versus Cedar Rapids Jose Rijo's line was 9-1-1-1-5-11.  His lone hit?  A homer by Franklin Stubbs....On 4= /4 versus Ruppert Erik Hanson's line was 9-2-1-1-1-11.  His lone hit?  A homer to Jerald Clark.  Mundy's pitcher Greg Harris struck= out 12 also....In his next start on the 8th against Cleveland Hanson one upped himself with 9-4-0-0-2-11....Bobby Bonilla walked in 7 straight games(15th-22nd).

 

LAKE SUPERIOR-On 4/21 versus Kansas Willie Wilson went 5-2-4-3 with a dou= ble and 3 stolen bases....Glenn Davis and Hubie Brooks both had 2 homer games in April....On 4/21 Brooks drove in 5 against Kansas with a gra= nd slam and sac fly....Dave Stieb hurled shutouts versus Cleveland and Ruppert....Davis homered in 4 straight games(8th-12th)....Melido Perez <= /b>leads the league with 7 quality starts and a 1.37 ERA.

 

CAR= OLINA-On 4/28 Ellis Burks was 5-2-4-2 with a double....On 4/21 top pick Fr= ank Thomas was 3-4-3-3 with 2 walks.  He homered and doubled.....Thomas hit safely in all 12 games he play= ed in April.  He had 21 hits and finished with a .438 average....On 4/7 against Cedar Rapids Scott Lewis = was perfect through 5 innings and had a no-hitter through 7 2/3.  The bottom fell out in the 8th aft= er that as he gave up 4 hits and 3 unearned runs.  He did get the win and finished wi= th a perfect 9th inning.

 

BIR= MINGHAM-On 4/6 versus Grosse Pointe Walt Weiss was 5-2-3-5 with a triple....In = the same game Bobby Witt had a line of 7-8-2-2-5-10 for the win....On 4/= 14 against Ruppert Paul O'Neill was 4-2-3-4.  The 4 ribbies came on a grand slam= in the 5th....Weiss led the league hitting .412(14 for 34) after the 7th inning.....Don Mattingly hit .500(8 for 16) after the 7th....Tough to run on Lance Parrish-he threw out 8 of 19 runners attempting to stea= l.

 

= AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

BAL= TIMORE-Get em early.  The Redbirds were 1= 7-0 when leading after 7 innings...Baltimore led the league with 171 runs, 130 walks and a hefty .369 OBA.....On 4/24 versus Niskayuna Randy Milligan <= /b>was 5-1-5-3 with 2 doubles and a homer....On 4/21 against Niskayuna Mickey Tettleton received 4 walks and didn't score once....On 4/16 fifth start= er Steve Wilson had the gem of the month going 9-1-0-0-1-6.

 

PAN= DORA-Eric Davis leads the league with 31 RBI's....Rob Dibble leads the lea= gue with 7 saves and had a 19/3 K to W ratio in 15 innings pitched....On 4/11 versus Colorado light hitting Felix Fermin smacked 3 doubles...On 4/= 26 versus Cleveland Sid Fernandez turned in a gem with a line of 9-4-0-0-2-10.

 

BRO= OKLYN-Ivan Calderon leads the league with 10 stolen bases.  He's tied with Willie Wilson....Henry Cotto swiped three bags in a game, including third base once....Matt Williams had a 20 game hit streak(7th-27th), batting .349 in the streak....On 4/24 versus Cleveland George Brett ended a marathon 19 inning affair with a walk-off 3-run homer....John Shelby had two 9th inning pinch hit singles for team wins.

 

FRA= NKFORT-A bombing raid over Frankfort!  = The Dogs lead the league with 37 homers....Cecil Fielder leads the league with 11....On 4/11 Fielder was 5-3-3-8.&nb= sp; Three homers and 2 strikeouts.  The big guy is always exciting....In that game Frankfort scored 21 r= uns on 23 hits....The Hot Dogs are 9-0 in games in which Fielder homers....The = Dogs had 2 4-HR games and hit the long ball in 11 straight games(14-25th).<= /o:p>

 

POC= ONO--Reverse vulture.  Tough luck Roger McDowell is 0-5 in relief....On 4-19 Gene Larkin banged out 5 hi= ts versus Niskayuna including 2 doubles.  He couldn't find home plate and was left stranded all five times....= Greg Olson was on base 7 times versus Beard on 4/15.  He singled, doubled twice and walk= ed four times in the 13 inning loss.  He didn't score a run....The Redd Stixx had a 9 game losing streak(14th-23rd).

 

CHI= CAGO-Chris James had a great month leading the AL with 47 hits, 12 doubles and a .= 379 average....Walt Terrell and Kevin Gross were a combined 0-9 a= nd Chicago was 0-14 in games in which they started....Kevin Appier saved the starters reputation with 2 shutouts versus Beard and Grosse Pointe.

 

NAT= IONAL LEAGUE EAST

 

NIS= KAYUNA-Despite scoring 31 fewer runs than they allowed, the MicroMets were 9-1 in one-run games and sit alone atop the NL East....They lead the NL with a .261 BA....= .Danny Tartabull has an active streak of striking out in 21 straight games.  He K'd 31 times in those games....= The Mets had only 2 batters hit better than .300 and they did it with style.  Alvin Davis hit .362 and Ron Oester hit .360....Ramon Martinez(5-2) and John Smoltz(4-= 1) are a combined 9-3.  The rest = of the staff is 7-9.

 

RUP= PERT-Their 35 homers were tops in the NL....The Mundy's 121 runs also led the senior circuit....On April 4 Greg Harris threw a gem 9-6-2-2-3-12, and lost!....Edgar Martinez had a 22 game hit streak, hitting .419 with a .485 OBA during that stretch....Dave Valle is tough to run against having thrown out 7 of 17 runners attempting to steal against him.

 

KIT= SILANO-The Hogs are 4-0 in extra innings....Tom Pagnozzi has gunned down 7 baserunners attempting to steal.  10 have been successful....On 4/23 versus the Hot Dogs, Pagnozzi drove in 5 ru= ns, 4 on a grand slam....On 4/2 against Lake Superior, Phil Bradley had a walk-off double....On 4/20 Mark Salas hit a game ending homer in the 10th versus Pandora's monster closer Rob Dibble.

 

COL= ORADO-On 4/15 versus Frankfort Shane Mack went 5 for 5 including a double.= ...Jose Canseco had an eight game RBI streak(13th-21st).  The big guy plated 12 in that stretch....Canseco also had 2 three run homers in April.<= /p>

 

CLE= VELAND-The Buckeyes scored a major league low of 81 runs in April....They batted in 257 innings and didn't score a run in 205 of those....On 4/20 against Birmingha= m Pedro Guerrero drove in 4 with a grand slam.=   He also had 2 three run homers in April....Roberto Kelly leads the league with 39 hits....David Wells leads the league with a 1.24 = ERA.

 

GRO= SSE POINTE-The Giants struggled against portsiders, going only 1-9 versus the lefthanders....Jeff Robinson was 1-5 with a 4 game losing streak goi= ng into May....Steve Crawford pitched in 12 games in April and the Gian= ts lost all 12!.....The Giants had an 8 game losing streak on way to a major league worst 8-20.

 

NAT= IONAL LEAGUE WEST

 

RED BLUFF-The Rough Riders were 13-0 when leading after 7 innings....On 4/17 against Lafayette, Ron Hassey gunned down the speedy Otis Nixon twice....Junior Felix banged 2 three run homers in April....Felix was the top RBI man for Red Bluff in April with 18....Mike Schooler appe= ared in 10 games a had 9 saves to go along with a 1.69 ERA.

 

BEA= RD-Eddie Murray has an active 15 game hit streak....On April 4th Mark Whiten'= s pinch hit single in the top of the ninth gave Beard a 4-3 win over Pocono....R= ob Ducey was 5 for 11(.455) as a pinch hitter....Roger Clemens leads the NL with 49 K's.

 

WAB= ASH-The Rivers .322 OBA was tops in the NL....Ken Griffey, the Elder, had a = big day versus the Q's on the 26th-4 for 4, 5 RBI's, 2 doubles, a homer and a walk....On 4/11 versus Pocono, Paul Molitor came into the game in the 5th and still managed to swipe 3 bases....The pen is mightier than the rotation.  Wabash relievers wo= n 7 games and the starters only 5....On 4/4 versus the Hot Dogs, Mike LaCoss= had a no-hitter through 6 innings, gave up a hit and a walk, had his defense co= mmit two errors and Frankfort tied it up with 4 unearned runs.  Dale Murphy popped a two run homer in the bottom of the inning securing a 6-4 win for the Rivers.

 

KNO= XVILLE-On 4/16 versus Lake Superior Lonnie Smith went 4-2-4-5 with a double an= d 2 homers....On 4/21 versus Birmingham, Cal Ripken went 4-2-4-5 also wi= th a double and 2 homers....Ripken was the top Blue Jay hitter going 7-19-.284 f= or April....Gary Pettis swiped 11 bases, getting caught only once.=

 

= CEDAR RAPIDS-Tough = luck Mark Gubicza had 6 quality starts but only had a 2-4 record to show for it....The Cyclones had a 7 game losing streak from the 13th to the 20th....= On 4/20 versus Lake Superior, Jaime Navarro had a line of 9-4-0-0-1-2.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  All four hits were harmless single= s.

 

KAN= SAS-Ken Griffey, the Younger had back to back game ending hits versus the Q's t= ough lefty closer Randy Myers.  On = the 17th he punched a 2 run single and the next day he crushed a 3 run homer to finish things for the day....Matt Nokes tossed out 12 would be basestealers.  16 were success= ful against him.....On 4/8 versus Baltimore Charlie Hayes had a steal of home....Doc Gooden had a line of 8-7-3-1-3-11 versus Lake Superior
