Here's a look at the upcoming 1987 draft. I've placed players in groups of 12 based on approximately where I would pick them in the first two rounds if they were the only players in a dispersal draft. I favored career value over immediate help but took that into account when comparing similarly valued players. I did not take into account various team's needs which will greatly affect where a player is taken. This is meant as only a value approximation tool and not as a predictive tool, but should give you a feeling of where a player's value lies. The numbering system following a player is as follows:Batters(450+ab,300-449ab,100-299ab,-100ab);Starters(30starts,20-29starts,10-19starts,10starts); Relievers(60+games,40-59games,20-39games,-20games). Pitchers games included bonus adjustments, batters ab's are raw unadjusted stats. These numbers only represent usage and don't reflect quality. For that you'll have to do the homework. After round two I just lumped everybody into a positional stew and made a comment about each player. Players are listed by an approximate value within each position. ROUND 1(PICKS 1-12) 1.TOM GLAVINE(12-3-0-0)A little rough in 87 but then settles in for a long hall of fame career. 2.FRED MCGRIFF(15-1-0-0)Crime Dog gives you consistent power for 16 years and counting. 3.EDGAR MARTINEZ(10-2-2-2)-Even though you have to wait 3 seasons, he's just so good that the wait is worth it. 4.ELLIS BURKS(8-5-3-0)-Here's your CF for several years of good to great production. 5.PAUL O'NEILL(12-2-1-0)-Starts out a decent RF but when he hits New York in '93 his game moves up a huge notch. 6.JOHN SMILEY(4-6-0-0)-He'll be in your pen in 87 and then move to your rotation for 10 years with most of them at high quality. 7.DAVID WELLS(7-4-2-0)-Three years warming up in the pen and then 13 as a solid 1-2-3 starter in the rotation. 8.KEN CAMINITI(9-2-3-1)-By 89 he'll be on your hot corner and stay there for 10 quality years, including an MVP, before injuries and drugs reduce him to part time. 9.JACK MCDOWELL(6-3-1-2)-From 88-96 he'll give you lots of quality innings as a frontline starter. 10.RON GANT(7-5-2-1)-Good power and speed, including 30-30 seasons in 90 and 91 but is injury prone and inconsistent. Despite the injuries has had long career. 11.MATT WILLIAMS(8-3-5-0)-It takes three years but then you have a power hitting 3B for 10 years. Low OBA keeps him behind Caminiti. 12.TERRY STEINBACH(3-10-0-0)-Good solid catcher for 13 years with lots of ab's. ROUND 1(PICKS 13-24) 13.JAY BELL(11-1-3-1)-Again you have to be patient but by 90 he'll be one of the better shortstops for 10 years. 14.B.J. SURHOFF(11-3-1-1)-Always thought he was overrated but 8 of first 9 years he'll be your backstop with the ability to play 1b-3b-of and hit decently for a catcher. 15.MIKE JACKSON(11-3-1-0)-Always underrated due to being a setup man, but always effective with some great years in the mix. 16.TIM BELCHER((7-5-1-1)-Pretty good starter until 93, lots of innings after that but gets raggedy. 17.RANDY MYERS(7-4-1-0)-One of the Nasty Boys who is a force in the pen for 12 years and will throw in 12 starts in '91. 18.DOUG JONES(8-6-0-0)-Soft tossing bullpen artist who gives you consistency and had almost a 4 to 1 K/BB ratio. 19.LANCE JOHNSON(7-3-2-2)-Speedy CF who will hit .300 but with little OBA skills. You'll have to wait until '90 for fulltime seasons. 20.JODY REED(5-4-1-1)-'88-'91 are sweet years for the second sacker. Has plenty of ab's afterwards but with less quality. 21.MARK MCLEMORE(6-5-3-2)-Plays 2b in '87 falls off the table for five years, then comes back in '93 as a supercharged utility man. 22.MIKE HENNEMAN(8-2-0-0)-Another quietly effective reliever who'll give you lots of games and decent IP/HITS ratios. 23.AL LEITER(4-5-2-5)-Only slipped this far because he doesn't do anything until '93 and is not a top end rotation man until '95. 24.JOE MAGRANE(2-4-1-1)-Gives you four good years up front, gets injured and comes back with a serviceable '93 before injuries take their toll again. ROUND 2(PICKS 25-36) 25.WALT WEISS(4-5-4-1)-Handy little SS but doesn't develop OBA skills until '93. 26.ROBERTO KELLY(4-5-2-3)-Didn't live up to the hype but is still a decent OF option. 27.JEFF BLAUSER(3-6-3-1)-Hit's his stride in '89 and will give you a few good years at shortstop. 28.LUIS POLONIA(3-6-3-0)-Low power with some speed will fill OF hole until '93. 29.CHUCK CRIM(5-2-1-0)-Will give you six years upfront of decent pen work. 30.JOSE LIND(5-1-3-0)-He'll fill a 2b void from '88-'93, but think defense. 31.JERRY BROWNE(3-2-4-1)-The Governor will be a nice fit a 2b on and off for a few years and will give you some utility help later. 32.DAVE MAGADAN(2-5-8-0)-If this guy had played 2b he would have been an All-Star. But he's a light hitting corner IF with little power and tons of OBA. 33.JIM EISENREICH(2-5-5-0)-Great story and from 89-97 he'll give you a good fourth OF. 34.SHANE MACK(2-3-4-0)-Backup in 87,88, misses '89 but 90-94 are very good, albeit injury prone years. 35.MIKE DEVEREAUX(3-5-0-4)-Peaks in '89-92 but will be a decent CF for you. 36.JOSE MESA(8-1-0-0)(1-2-0-2)-The second set of numbers reflect '87-'93 role as a starter. Goes to the pen in '94 with much success the next nine years. ROUND 2(PICKS 37-48) 37.MARK WILLIAMSON(5-1-1-1)-Decent but by no means great reliever can help you first five years out. 38.GREG CADARET(2-7-0-1)-Gives you a fair amount of games '87-94 with some quality thrown in. 39.BILL LANDRUM(2-2-1-2)-Gives you games in '87, misses 88, but '89-91 are very good. 40.PETE SMITH(1-2-7-1)-Will be in your rotation in '88-'89 but is strictly part time starter after that. 41.JOEY CORA(4-2-4-1)-Strictly utility '88-92 but throws in some good full time 2b seasons 93-98. 42.LES LANCASTER(3-4-0-0)-Gives you some bullpen games for seven years. 43.JEFF TREADWAY(2-2-2-3)-Is an option at 2b '88-'91. 44.TIM CREWS(3-2-1-0)-Will help in the pen for six years until his untimely death. 45.JOHN FARRELL(2-1-1-4)-Fits into your rotation in '88 and '89 very nicely and will throw in a few quality starts in '87 and '90. 46.WILLIE FRASER(1-3-0-1)-Fits into your rotation in '87 and '88 then gives you three years from the pen. 47.MIKE DUNNE(0-3-1-1)-Nice rotation guy in '87 and '88 then injuries throttle him. 48.TOM PAGNOZZI(2-2-5-3)-Strictly backup except for four years in early 90's but catching is hard to come by. REMAINING CATCHERS DAMON BERRYHILL(0-4-3-3)-The ab's come in 88,89,92-94 but quality is low. CHARLIE O'BRIEN(0-1-10-2)-When God created backup catchers, O'Brien was used as the mold. MARK PARENT(0-0-7-5)-Strictly backup with a couple power flashes along the way. LLOYD MCCLENDON(0-0-6-2)-Gives you a good bat a couple of years. MACKEY SASSER(0-0-6-2)-Let the backup backstops continue. DOUG SHEAFFER(0-0-5-2)-Yet another backup. JOHN MARZANO(0-0-4-6)-This is like the Lucy episode where the chocolates keep rolling off the line. MIKE BRUMLEY(0-0-4-4)-As Herbert Hoover said, "Two catchers in every dugout". BARRY LYONS(0-0-2-4)-Now we're getting to the backup's backup. TERRY MCGRIFF(0-0-1-5)-We've had the Crime Dog, this is the Crime Puppy. CORNER INFIELDERS TODD BENZINGER(1-4-3-1)-I seem to remember he had some promise but it went unfulfilled. GENE LARKIN(1-3-3-0)-Some OBA skills but the power is missing. SAM HORN(0-1-3-4)-A mighty stroke that missed more than it hit. TRACY WOODSON(0-0-3-2)-Hits .307 in '92 but nothing else. ROB NELSON(0-0-0-4)-A roster clogger. CHUCK JACKSON(0-0-0-3)-Could clog your roster any day now. MIDDLE INFIELDERS FELIX FERMIN(2-3-2-3)-Have light bat, will play middle infield. BILLY RIPKEN(1-3-5-3)-Reminds me a lot of the other Ripken, Cal Sr. NELSON LIRIANO(0-2-6-3)-Actually has some decent seasons along the way. MIKE SHARPERSON(0-2-2-4)-Made the All-Star team in '92 after a good first half. JIM WALEWANDER(0-0-1-3)-Great name, poor player. OUTFIELDERS GERALD YOUNG(2-0-3-3)-87-89 will give you some stolen bases and little power/OBA. DAVE GALLAGHER(1-1-6-1)-You could do worse at backup OF. STAN JEFFERSON(0-1-3-1)-Will give you 422 ab's in '87 and little else. ROB BROWER(0-1-1-1)-Decent fourth OF in '87. ROB DUCEY(0-0-4-9)-Always seemed to hit well but never played much. SHAWN ABNER(0-0-4-2)-Not much here. CHRIS GWYNN(0-0-3-7)-Redbirds have his brother but family ties mean nothing if you can't hit. GARY THURMAN(0-0-2-7)-Chris Gwynn lite.
