1975 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Game One
San Diego Staduim - 6 Oct 1975 - Rookie Dennis Eckersley was given the Lemmings first
ever post season starting pitching assignment by manager Jim Bendik and came through like a
seasoned veteran. Eckersley not only pitched a gem of a game, but came through with a
couple of clutch 2 out RBI hits. The Lemmings came out against the 5-0's Tiant in the
bottom of the 1st with a leadoff single by Ontiveros, followed by an RBI double by Hal
MacRae and a sac fly by 1B John Mayberry to take a quick 2 - 0 lead.
In the bottom of the 2nd, 2b Derrel Thomas hit a double and with 2 outs,Eck stepped up
with a full count. "I knew Tiant was going to throw something down the middle with a full
count, so I just swung away" said Eck. He nearly put the ball over the wall and cruised
into 2nd with a stand up double. 3rd Baseman Steve Ontiveros followed with another 2 out
double to bring home Eck, making it 4 - 0 in favor of the Lemmings.
Things stayed quiet until the bottom of the 4th when ss Larvell Blanks hit a 2 out double
off of reliever Sadecki. Eck stepped up and again delivered with a clutch 2 out hit to plate
Blanks to make it 5 - 0.
The Lemmings put 2 more on the board in the bottom of the 5th to make it 7 -0 and give Eck
plenty of cushion, or so he thought. In the top of the 7th, the 5 -0's chased Eck with a
3 runs, courtesy of 2 base on balls and some timely hitting by the 5-0's pinch hitter Solaita.
Each team managed to put another another run, but it wasn't enough for the 5-0's as the
Lemmings took the opening game 9-4.

Game Two
Led by stellar pitching, the 5-0's and Jim Kaat shut down the Dorsey Lemmings 4-2
to even the series 1-1. Kaat was given a quick 2 run lead when George Brett yanked a
2 run home run off of Game 2 loser, Frank Tanana. "I thought I could fool George and
slip a breaking ball by him, but he's got a great eye. He's going to be around for a
long time in this league if he keeps getting clutch hits like that."
Kaat was in control the whole game. He gave up a pair of run in the 3rd and 4th inning,
but was never in serious danger of losing the game.
"He had us frustrated and impatient at the plate" said Fred Lynn who went 0-4.

Game Three
The series shifted to beautiful Aloha stadium in Honolulu for Game 3. With the temperature
a balmy 76 degrees at game time, the 5'0s send lefthander Don Gullett, 9-8, 3.96 ERA, to
the mound facing ace righty and Cy Young candidate Bob Forsch, 25-3, 2.53 ERA.
The Lemmings open the scoring with leadoff batter Steve Ontiveros (.315, .470 OPB) singling
to LF. Hal McRae walks, Freddie Lynn strikes out, but Big John Mayberry raps a double (38
during the year) plating Ontiveros, McRae stopping at third. Jackson strikes out stranding
two. 1-0 Lemmings.
The 5'0s answer in the bottom of the first. A single by Monday (.282, .385 OBP and 90 runs
scored) and Sac bunt by Grich puts a runner at 2B for Hawaii. Harrah grounds out to Derrell
Thomas, moving the runner to third. Forsch throws one to the screen, plating Monday. Brett
and Solatia walk, but Forsch induces Crawford to ground weakly to Thomas to end the inning.
The 5'0s strike again in the second. Ashby doubles with one out, and after Gullett fails to
move the runner over, Monday doubles off the wall in center field, Ashby motoring home.
Lemmings 1, 5'0s 2.
Both pitchers settle down and stifle the offenses through the next 5 innings. The Lemmings
get a couple of hits in the third, but Ontiveros is gunned down by Ashby on a hit and run
and Lynn files to the wall in LF, leaving McRae on base. Forsch encounters a little trouble
in the 5th when Larvell Blanks kicks a grounder, but Grote smokes Monday (him again!) at
second on a hit and run attempt. Grich is hit by a pitch, Harrah singles, but Brett fouls
out to Mayberry at first to end the threat.
The bottom falls out for the Lemmings in the 8th. With 1 out, a tiring Forsch hangs a curve,
which Brett (.309 with 36 2Bs) rips to left-center for a double. Forsch is replaced by lefty
Mike Beard (22 g, 3.72 ERA). Scott bats for Solatia and is given a free pass. PH Tarzan Joe
Wallis singles to center plating Brett on a close play at the plate, Scott moving to 3rd and
Wallis to second. Bill Sharp, a .332 hitter in 205 ABs during the regular season, gets a
clutch single to Lynn in CF, scoring Boomer and Tarzan Joe, but is out at second trying to
stretch it to a double. Lemmings 1, 5'0s 5.
And that was the way it ended. Gullett pitches a complete game 5-hitter with 8 K's, atoning
somewhat for an off-season. Forsch went 7 1/3, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, but Beard can't
stem the tide allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.

Game Four
A 12 mph tropical breeze is blowing out to CF as game 4 gets underway. The 5'0s look to
close out the series with underachieving portsider Rudy May (11-11, 4.41) facing right-hander
Jim Barr (16-9, 3.14).
The odds look to be in favor of the Lemmings with Barr on the mound, but for this game.
After a wasted single by Lynn in the first for the Lemmings, the 5'0s come out swinging.
Monday gets on when SS Blanks bobbles his grounder. After a weak groundout by Grich, Harrah
slashes a single. Brett pops out, but with 2-down, Scott, who had 29 dingers during the
regular season, sends one deep to left and over the wall for a 3-run shot! Lemmings 0, 5'0s 3.
Two scoreless innings follow before the Lemmings strike back in the top of the 4th. McRae
walks and Lynn singles him to second. Mayberry sends a long one to the wall in RF, but a
leaping catch by Jose Cruz saves 2 runs. After Reggie is intentionally walked, Grote grounds
out scoring McRae. Derrell Thomas grounds to Grich at second, ending the threat. Lemmings 1,
5'0s 3.
The 50's answer in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Crawford, Cruz and Ashby single,
Ashby's plating Crawford. Rudy May hits a long fly to CF, scoring Cruz on a dead heat at
the plate after a good throw by Lynn. Barr leaves the game as lefty, Jim Crawford comes on
to pitch. Monday walks. Rodriguez comes on to face Grich who grounds out 1-3. Lemmings 1,
5'0s 5.
The 5'0s plate single runs in the 6th and 7th. Monday doubles home Cruz in the 6th, and
Cruz singles home Harrah in the 7th off Clay Carroll. Lemmings 1, 5'0s 7.
May cruises into the 8th, when the Lemmings fight back. A single by Ontiveros, a free-pass
to Lynn and on comes Gary Lavelle, who immediately fills the bases with a walk. A GO by
Mayberry brings home Ontiveros. An IW to Reg-gie Jackson to set up a DP fails as Jerry
Grote whacks a bingle to the gap, plating 2. Thomas follows with a run-scoring single and
that is it for the ineffective Lavelle. Jim Todd stems the tide with Blanks popping to 3B
and PH Luis Melendez strikes out. Lemmings 5, 5'0s 7.
Todd closes the Lemmings out uneventfully in the 9th and the champagne flows for the champs!
The 5'0s batted .265 scoring 20 runs with 7 2Bs, 2 HRs and 2 SBs. Hitting stars for the 5'0s
balanced attack included: George Scott, 4 for 12 with a 2B, Hr, 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs;
Ashby 6-12; Sharp 1-5 with a clutch 2-rbi single; and Monday .308, 3 2Bs, 4 RBI. Grich was
just 1-14 for an .073 BA. For the Lemmings, Ontiveros 6-17, .353 BA, 2 2Bs, 3 runs scored
and McRae, 5-15, 2B, 2 triples, 4 runs and 3 RBI's were the big hitters. Mayberry chipped
in 2-2Bs and a homer, 4 RBIs, but hit only .214.
Pitching and a balanced, timely hitting attack won it for the 5'0s. The Lemmings were held
to a .214 BA, 17 runs, a .280 OPB and 1 homer. After Tiant was shelled in Game 1, Co-MVPs
Kaat and Gullet pitched back-to-back CGs. Manager Baxter's strategy to nuetralize the
Lemmings LH power by using 3 portsiders in a row stymied the Lemmings' hitters in games
2 and 3, and for 7 innings in game 4. For the Lemmings, Eckersley pitched 6 2/3rds in
game 1, giving up 3 runs and striking out 8 for the win. Forsch was effective in game 3
but the relievers couldn't slow down the balanced attack of the 5'0s.
On to the World Series! Could this year be the one for the islanders?
