1975 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Game One:
Sometimes a series comes down to one pitch, and that pitch renders the series a classic. . .
Game 1.
Magpies underachieving starter Mike Cuellar, perhaps reaching the end of his career,
took the mound against dominant Mudhens ace Ken Holtzman in a duel of lefties to start
the series. Holtzman seemed shaky at first, allowing 7 runs to reach base, and two to
score, in the first two innings. However, Cuellar showed ample vulnerability in the next
two innings, allowing first Rod Carew’s rbi double to halve the score to 2-1, then Mike
Jorgensen’s 4th inning single to tie it. The Mudhens jumped out in front in the fifth on
George Foster’s 2-run double, and added an needed insurance run in the 7th on Reggie
Smith’s double. The Magpies made a game of it in the 8th, when Wayne Granger gave up a
2-run double to Juan Beniquez. But Grant Jackson’s ineffectiveness (the 9th inning double
he allowed to Foster letting the game slip away),combined with Goose Gossage’s mastery
led to a convincing 7-4 Mudhens victory in the opener.

Game Two:
Magpies ace, 20-game winner Bert Blyleven pitched long, hard, and well, scattering
five hits and striking out 9 over 8 innings, and allowing only two mistakes: a single
to Reggie Smith in the first inning, that moved Rod Carew to third to set up one
fielders-choice run; and a fifth inning double to pitcher Fergie Jenkins, who scored
on Mickey Rivers single. Unfortunately for Blyleven, the Mud Hens’ Ferguson Jenkins
was even more masterful, scattering just two hits (and hitting two batters!) over a
complete game shutout, as the Mudhens take a daunting 2-0 lead on the road in the series,
headed back to their home ballpark

Game Three:
The American League playoff series shifted to the Toledo Mudhens home park for Game 3,
as the Magpies’ Spaceman faced off against Pete Falcone. Trying to get the jump on their
opponent, the Magpies used patience and timely singles to mount a first-inning, 2-run lead.
Lee was able to keep the home team at bay for four innings before the ‘Hens broke through,
rocking him in the 5th for three runs, on Reggie Smith’s lead-off home run, and doubles by
Brooks Robinson, Bert Campaneris, and Rod Carew. Don Baylor led off the Toledo 6th with a
triple, scoring easily on Smith’s grounder to make it 4-2. Meanwhile Falcone walked the
bases loaded in the 5th, only to get out of it unscathed on a ground out. Wayne Granger,
however, handed the game back to the durable Lee and the Magpies in the 7th by allowing
a 2-run home run to the previously unproductive Bill Melton, a double to Steve Braun, a
Vic Correll rbi single and Bucky Dent sac fly. Bill Lee held on to shut down the Hens to
keep the Magpies alive in the series, but still down 2 games to 1.

Game Four:
Facing elimination, the Magpies were confronted with the choice of going with surprise
success story Bob Gibson, who went 19-11 in his MLB swansong, or young Brent Strom, with
their season on the line. Taking a big risk, they went with the young, fresh blood of the
lefthander. Toledo, behind ace Ken Holtzman, took the early lead with Brooks Robinson’s
solo home run in the third. But the Magpies dug deep into their pockets in the 4th inning,
as light-hitting catcher Vic Correll shocked the Toledo fans with a 2-run homer. Correll
added an rbi in the 67th on a ground out. Then in the seventh, after a tired Holtzman gave
way to Mudhens regular season 4th starter Roric Harrison, Magpies 2nd baseman Jack Brohamer
shocked the crowd again with a 2-run homer of his own. Steve Braun added an rbi-single of
his own in the 9th, as the Magpies and Brent Strom cruised to a 6-1 victory, knotting the
series at 2.

Game Five :
With the series on the line for both teams, the hottest and most reliable hands of the
post season, Fergie Jenkins and Bert Blyleven, squared off against each other. True to form,
this proved a pitching duel extraordinaire. Jenkins extended his postseason scoreless streak
to 16 innings. The biggest threat came in the 6th inning, when the Magpies loaded the bases
with one out, only to have Jenkins strike out game 3 hero Bill Melton and Game 4 hero Vi
Correll to escape unharmed.
Meanwhile Blyleven, who threw 136 pitches in Game 2, finally tired in the 6th. The inning
began with a rare error by the normally sure-handed Blyleven on Rod Carew’s bunt attempt.
After Foster struck out, Correll let a ball get behind him and roll to the backstop, sending
Carew to second. Blyleven walked Campaneris and allowed a single to Baylor, loading the bases.
He struck out Fisk, but Reggie Smith lined a single, scoring Carew and Campaneris. Blyleven
regained his composure in the 7th, answering Jenkins final shutout inning by retiring the
Mudhens in order.
Nursing a 2-0 lead, Jenkins lost control of the game in the 8th, giving up consecutive
singles to Singleton, Braun, and Bochte, scoring one run. Although he induced Melton to
ground into a double play, pinch-hitter Bob Watson stroked another single to tie the score.
Blyleven came out for the 8th and showed some shakiness of his own, giving up an rbi single
to Fisk to put the Mudhens ahead 3-2. But luck was still on the side of Edmonton, as Fisk
was thrown out trying to score from first on Reggie Smith’s line double.
Down 3-2, the Magpies set to work in the 9th inning. With one out, Lenny Randle doubled,
knocking Jenkins from the game and bringing on the normally unhittable Goose Gossage. The
Goose, however, immediately surrendered a game-tying single to Lyman Bostock, walked the
bases full, then let the go-ahead run score on Bruce Bochte’s grounder. Gossage recovered
in time to K Melton to end the inning and the thread.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, and looking to nail down their third straight
come-from-behind victory on the road, the Magpies were faced with a decision. Blyleven
had clearly tired in the 8th, and threw 123 pitches on this day to add to his long outing
in Game 2. With Grant Jackson having been less reliable than usual during the regular
season, and also in his Game 1 appearance, manager Williams went with relief workhorse
Paul Lindblad, who had pitched reasonably well in his previous 2 series appearances. But
the lefthander quickly surrendered a leadoff single to lefty Mike Jorgensen. Mickey Rivers
came on to run for Jorgensen, and Brooks Robinson bunted him to second. Predictably, Toledo
manager Rich Applegate brought in the right-handed Gene Tenace to pinch hit, and here was
where Chris Williams faced the critical decision of the series: To pitch to Tenace or not.
Tenace had hardly been used in the series, having started only one game. Was he rusty?
Should Williams bring in a righty to face him? The choices were grim. Dick Lange and
Greg Terlecky were less than reliable options, and Bob Gibson had tired visibly during
September, and besides was prone to the long ball. Lindblad had allowed only 4 homers
all year, in almost 110 innings pitched. Walking Tenace was an option, but with Carew
due up it was not a pretty one. Cautiously, Lindblad tried to pitch around the slugging
catcher, but Tenace connected, sending the ball over the centerfield fence and sending
the Toledo Mudhens to the World Series for the second straight year, and the Magpies home,
for the second straight year.
