A.L.Champions Rock Island Arsenal vs. N.L.Champions Maumee River Carp
SPB3-1939 WORLD SERIES GAME 1
Game 1 - September 30, 1939.
Just ten days ago, the boxing world bore witness to one of its greatest matches, as Joe
Louis and Bob Pastor slugged it out for the heavyweight championship at Detroit Stadium.
The issue was ever in doubt until the Brown Bomber's fatal right hook in the 11th round
sent Pastor to the canvas for the final count.
The Fenway Faithful might well be forgiven if they thought they were seeing a reprise of
that bout yesterday at the local ballyard. Like two hardened prize fighters, the Rock
Island Arsenal and the hometown Grays went toe-to-toe from beginning to end, before Joe
Medwick delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the ninth, lacing a two-out double
to score Charlie Gehringer and give Worcester a breath-taking 9-8 victory in the opening
game of the 1939 World Series.
The Rock Island club, baseball's most prolific hitting unit, opened with a flurry of punches
in the first to put the Grays and their veteran hurler Paul Derringer on the ropes. Stan
Hack opened the contest by legging out out an infield hit, moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt by Billy Herman, then scored on George Selkirk's single. A solid knock by Hank Greenberg
moved Twinkletoes along, and rookie sensation Charlie Keller boomed a triple to left center to
plate both mates. Billy Myers' fly ball tallied Keller, and before Worcester's fans could
settle comfortably in their seats, the score was 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
But Worcester came out of its corner swinging in the home half. Ben Chapman lined Claude
Passeau's first pitch over the second base bag, and Gehringer followed with a double into
the triangle. Bob Johnson's air ball to left was deep enough to score Chapman, Hal Trosky's
wall double pushed Gehringer across the dish, and with two gone, Cookie Lavagetto singled home
Trosky to make it 4-3.
Apparently exhausted, both clubs' artillery went eerily quiet until, in the bottom of the sixth,
with a man aboard, Lavagetto laid into a slow curve from Passeau and launched it over the left
field wall to put the home nine ahead, 5-4. Lavagetto's blow also launched another exchange of
counterpunches from the pugilists. The Arsenal re-took the lead in the top of the seventh
inning by scoring three times, Hack's double scoring one and Selkirk's single plating another
pair. They added another in the top of the eighth on a hit by Passeau to take an 8-5 advantage
and put the Grays on the mat. Before they could be counted out, though, the Worcesters picked
themselves up and battled back. Johnson and Trosky opened the bottom of the inning with hits
to knock Rock Island's top rock-thrower from the mound. His replacement, Jack Wilson, proved to
be more a featherweight than his predecessor. With one out, Babe Phelps doubled Johnson home
and Trosky to third; a Lavagetto grounder scored Trosky; and pinch-hitter Chet Laabs stroked a
clutch double to knot things 8-8.
Mace Brown, Worcester's third pitcher of the day, set the Arsenal down in the 9th, setting the
stage for the dramatic doings of the Grays' final turn at bat. Gehringer singled with one out,
Johnson waited out a walk, and Medwick's smash into the left-field corner sent the local rooters
happily on their way, as the National League champions grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the Series.

SPB3-1939 WORLD SERIES GAME 2
Game 2 - October 1, 1939.
The exhuberance of youth yielded to the wisdom of old age today in the friendly confines of
Fenway. Worcester's master twirler, 39-year-old Lefty Grove, quieted the Rock Island bats
and his gray-bearded batterymate, 38-year-old Gabby Hartnett, hit a decisive two-run homer,
as the Grays beat the Arsenal, 6-2, to take a 2-0 lead in the Series.
The home club's stunning, come-from-behind victory yesterday may very well have taken the
starch out of the visitors' uniforms. Not only did their bats go limp, but their gloves
abandoned them as well. An error by Rock Island moundsman Eldon Auker, who was nearly Grove's
equal on the hill for six innings, led to one unearned run, and another by the usually
sure-handed shortstop, Billy Myers, cost them another. It was a particularly forgettable
day for young Myers, who made a second muff and fanned three times.
Worcester got on the board immediately in their opening at-bat. Ben Chapman walked, stole
second, moved to third when Auker misplayed Charlie Gehringer's comebacker, and crossed home
on Bob Johnson's double-play grounder. In the second inning, Auker was slow off the mound to
field Joe Medwick's squibber, allowing Ducky to reach first, and Hartnett followed with a
majestic shot over the green rampart in left. That would turn out to be all the Grays needed,
for though the visitors drew close with single runs in the fourth and fifth - including a
round-tripper by Hank Greenberg - Grove stiffened his spine and permitted a mere single over
the final four frames. Myers' miscue in the seventh led to a two-run single by Chapman, which
sealed Rock Island's fate.
The Series now moves to the Polo Grounds. Tommy Bridges is slated to start Game 3 for
Worcester; he'll likely be opposed by ex-Gray Hugh Mulcahy.

SPB3-1939 WORLD SERIES GAME 3
Game 3 - October 3, 1939.
The World Series arrived in Rock Island for the first time in baseball history as Hugh
Mulchay (13-11) toed the mound for the Arsenal vs. Tommy Bridges (17-9) for the Grays.
The Grays went down in order in the top of the first. Stan Hack singled to lead off the
bottom of the first, and after Herman and Selkirk whiffed, Greenberg walked. But Keller
could not pick up his teammates and went down on strikes.
Hugh was on his game and retired the side in order in the 2nd and 3rd. In the bottom of
the third, Stan Hack blasted a Bridges fastball deep to right to put the Arsenal up by
one. Again, Mulcahy retired the Grays in order in the 4th. In the bottom of the frame,
the Arsenla scored an unearned run when Grays 3B Cookie Lavagetto threw high to 1B on a
grounder by Charlie Keller. Little Billy Myers grounded a single up the middle and the
Arsenal were in business. Johnny Cooney hit a screaming liner to left plating Keller.
It looked like the Arsenal might blow open the game, but Bridges bore down and struck
out Peacock and induced Mulcahy to ground out weakly into a force out at 2nd.
The Grays bounced back in the 5th, tallying a run on infield miscues by the Arsenal.
Trosky led off the inning with a routine grounder that Billy Herman booted. After Medwick
lined out to Hack, Phelps hit a bingle moving Trosky to 2nd. Lavagetto walked on four
pitches as Mulcahy struggled with his control. Eddie Miller grounded what looked like
a DP grounder to Myers, which he picked up, dropped and finally fumbled away any chance
for an out, allowing Trosky to score. Facing his counterpart, Mulchay induced Bridges to
hit into a DP, ending the threat.
The wheels came of the Grays cart in the bottom of the 5th. Hack led off with a single,
and Manager Baxter, playing scientific baseball, had Billy Herman execute a sacrifice.
George Selkirk hit a bomb to right putting the Arsenal up by two. Greenberg tripled and
the rattled Bidges hit Keller. Pesky Billy Myers singled home Greenberg as Keller raced
to 3rd. Cooney grounded out plating the 4th and final run of the inning as the Arsenal
took a commanding 6-1 lead.
Bob Johnson homered for the Grays in the 6th, but Mulcahy was on his game and held the
Grays hitless the rest of the way. A solid 2 hitter for Hugh as the Arsenal win 6-2.

SPB3-1939 WORLD SERIES GAME 4
Game 4 - October 4, 1939.
With renewed hope, Arsenal fans packed the Polo Grounds expecting some heavy hitting
by the vaunted Arsenal lineup. It was not to be, however, as Game 1 starter Claude
Passeau (22-6) for the Arsenal vs. Paul Derringer (13-12) for the Grays hooked up in
a Pitchers duel.
The Arsenal struck first in the 2nd when Keller walked and Jimmy Ripple doubled him
home. After a couple of uneventful innings, the Grays tied the game in the 5th on a
Ben Chapman homer. The Arsenal came back in the bottom of the inning. Passeau beat
out an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Stan Hack. George Selkirk singled
to Miller at SS sending Hack to third. Greenberg singled home Claude, but Selkirk ran
past a stop sign and was gunned down at by Indian Bob Johnson, killing the rally.
The Grays tied it in the 7th. Cookie Lavagetto singled and stole 2nd. After a ground out
moved Cookie to 3rd, Gabby Hartnet pinch hit for Derringer and hit a two hopper to Billy
Herman who booted it allowing Cookie to score.
Mace Brown came on to pitch for the Grays and got out of trouble in the 7th and 8th after
an error by Mace on a pickoff and a fumble by Medwick put the potential winning run at
second base in both frames. The Grays threatened in the 9th when Medwick walked and was
sacrificed to second, but died there as Passeau sturck out Lavagetto and PH Odell Halle
grounded out.
In the bottom of the 9th, Powers lined a 2-out PH single to left and Hack hit an infield
single to third. Herman then grounded to Gehringer at second, ending the threat.
Youngster Marius Russo (7-3) took the mound in the top of the 10th for the Arsenal, and
was greeted with a long home run from Chet Laabs pinch hitting for Mace Brown. Gehringer
singled in the frame, but Russo managed to induce a couple of ground outs to close out the
inning.
Jumbo Thompson came in to nail down the victory for the Grays. Selkirk led off with a
single and Greenberg moved him to second on a groundout. After Keller was intentionally
walked, Billy Myers stepped to the plate. Arsenal fans were on their feet, remembering
the clutch hits Billy had during the season, but their hopes were deflated when he struck
out on a 2-2 count. Cullenbine, who had a couple of game winning homers, pinch hit for
Johnny Cooney, but grounded out to give the Grays a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

SPB3-1939 WORLD SERIES GAME 5
Game 5 - October 5, 1939.
Game 1 winner Lefty Grove was tabbed to start against rookie Vance Page of the Arsenal.
The Grays got off to a good start as Ben Chapman led off with a triple over the 1st base
bag and scored on Gehringer’s groundout. A rattled Page walked the next two, but a couple
of ground balls later he was out of the inning.
The Arsenal tied the game in the 2nd. Greenberg walked and Keller laid down a surprise
sacrifice bunt to move him to 2nd. Myers walked, and on a busted hit and run, Greenberg
and Myers each moved up a base. Cooney singled home Hank, but Myers held at third and
died there when Davis and Page failed to move him home.
In the top of the 4th, the Grays went ahead. Medwick walked and Phelps singled him to
third. Lavagetto grounded to Hack who tried to get the out at home but Medwick slid in
under Spud Davis’ tag.
That was the end of the scoring as both team’s pitching took over. Thompson had to relive
Grove in the 8th when Roy Cullenbine singled with one out, but that was all the Arsenal
could muster. The Grays close out the Arsenal in the final game 2-1.
The pitching was very good in the series after game 1. The Grays hit .188 but timely
hitting pushed across 22 runs in the 5 games. Rock Island hit .260, but scored only 19
runs as time after time Grays pitching shut down rallies.
The hitting stars were Stan Hack for the Arsenal, 7-20 with a HR and 4 runs scored and
Ben Chapman for the Grays, 5-20 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI and a 3B and HR. The pitching
stars were Lefty Grove (2-0) and Jumbo Thompson, who saved the final 2 games. Mulcahy
was the lone bright spot for Arsenal with a CG 2-hitter in game 3.
