SERIES STATISTICS

Game 1:

The 1963 World series started off under clear skies and a tollerable 56 degree temperature
as both teams came out swinging in the first. Al Downing retired Curt Flood and surrendered
a single to Tommy Tresh. Willie Mays then jacked a 2-run homer over the left field wall giving
the Mavs a quick 2-0 lead. The Grays answered back in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single
by Tony Taylor, who then stole second. Willie Davis sacrificed him to third. Hank Aaron flew out
to Mays in center before Frank Howard deposited a White Ford offering deep into the abyss
tying the game at 2. The Mavs added a run in the third with a single by Flood, a sacrifice
by Tresh, and an RBI single by Mays giving him all 3 RBI for the game. The Grays tied the
game at 3 in the bottom of the 6th with a Pete Ward home run after Ford had struck out
Aaron and Howard for the first 2 outs. Lincoln took the lead in the 7th with a leadoff
walk by Wayne Causey, who was then sacrificed by pinch-hitter Leo Cardenas. Tony Taylor then
singled him home, making him 4-4 on the day. The Mavericks threatened in the 8th off of
reliever Bill Kunkel, who gave up successive singles to Willie Mays and Bill White.
Bill Robinson then hit into a 643 double play, with Johnny Roseboro grounding out to third
to end the threat. Al Worthington worked the 9th retiring the first two batters before
surrendering a 2-out walk to pinch-hitter Charlie Maxwell, and a single to Curt Flood.
Tommy Tresh then grounded out to the shortstop on a fielders choice to end the game
giving the Lincoln Grays a 1 game to none advantage.

Game 2:

Cloudy skies greeted the ball players and fans to the park for Game 2 of the 1963
World Series. The Grays wasted no time repeating their first inning heroics by
putting up 2 on the board in the opening frame. Mavericks starter Don Nottebart
retired the first two batters before Ed Brinkman committed an error putting Aaron on
first. Frank Howard got his pop-swervin groove on again and blasted his second homer in
10 innings putting the Grays up 2-0. The Grays continued to peck away at Mavs starter
Don Nottebart with single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, increasing the
Grays lead to 6-0, including another homer by Frank Howard in the 5th. The Mavs scored
one run in the top of the 6th on a 2-out home run from Bill White. More pressure was
added in the top of the 8th, as with 2 outs, the Mavericks mounted a charge with a single
by Curt Flood, a walk by Al Weis, and consecutive run scoring singles by White, Mays,
and Tresh. Maloney was then yanked by Grays interim manager John Turnbull, with Gary
Roggenburk striking out Bill Robinson to end the inning. He then settles down to retire
the side in the 9th to give the Grays a 2-0 series lead as the series shifts to the desert.

Game 3:

Game 3 a sunny 67 degree day at Yankee Stadium as Jim Bouton of the Grays and Juan Pizarro of the Mavericks take their final tosses on the sidelines. The Grays won games 1 and 2 in exciting, worlds series fashion, trying to dethron the defending champs. In the 1st inning, Willie Mays doubles home Flood following his single and the Mavericks grab a 1-0 after 1 inning. In the 4th inning, Pepitone reaches first on an error by Brinkman, then Battey drills a 3-2 pitch over the LF wall and the Grays grab a 2-1 lead after 4 innings of play. In the 6th inning, Bouton gets wild, but the CM surprisingly stays with him, and Mazeroski SAC with the bases loaded to score the tying run. Then Flood singles to LF and plates one more, but that's all the High Desert group gets, but the lead is now with the Mavericks by the score of 3-2. In the 7th, the light hitting Mazeroski SAC Bill White with the insurance run, and Pizarro finishes up pitching a CG 4-hitter, 7 K's, 0 walks.

Game 4:
Game 4 partly cloudy and a cold 49 degrees and hoping that Yankee stadium 
can continue to thwart the heavy RH's on the Grays roster.
It'll be Larry Jackson for the visiting Grays and Cheney for the High 
Desert Mavericks.

The Mavericks break open a 2-2 tie in the 6th, by scoring 4 runs and help 
from the Grays defense as Ward couldn't come up with a hot ground ball and 
that allowed for a couple unearned runs in the inning. Cheney pitched 8 
innings of 4 hit ball to get the win, and Baldschun pitched a 3 batter 
ninth to get the save. As the Mavericks evened the series at 2-2 with the 
6-2 win. Jackson didn't help himself in the 3rd inning, when he hit 
Brinkman and both were ejected when both benches cleared the benches. The 
Mavericks promptly hit reliever Kunkel and Stan Williams and came away with 
the win.

Game 5:
Game 5  Rain has hit the stadium, but commissioner Plunkitt says "play it, 
we have trading to get under way". Nottebart get's the surprise
call and Downing is also a surprise as "interim" manager, John Turnbull 
trys to shake things up. Unfortunately both strategy's fail as the rain 
forces a 72 minute delay and the starters are removed from the game in the 
3rd inning with no score and only one hit in the game. McCormick came in, 
but the last of the 5th, PH Maxwell singles, two outs later, Mays walks, 
then White singles in one and Robinson singles in another and the Mavs have 
a 2-0 lead. Bunning pitches 3 scoreless innings, then Kline pitches 3 
scoreless innings, and then Baldschun
pitches a scoreless ninth to pick up the save and the "team shutout". Not 
sure if that's the 1st "team" shutout in SPB history or not.

So the Mavericks head home leading the series 3-2.

Game 6:

Game 6 comes back to D.C. under cloudy skies and 11mph R-L winds.
The Mavericks jumped on Jim Maloney early with a 2-out double by W.Mays,
and consecutive singles by F.White and T.Tresh. Maloney then settled down
to retire the Mavs for the reainder of his stint. The Grays clawed back in the
5th with a single by J.Pepitone, a sacrifice by E.Battey, and a run-scoring
double by W.Causey. Solo home runs by W.Davis in the 6th and E.Battey in the 7th
puts the Grays ahead with the crowd sensing a game 7. The Grays added 2 more
insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th with a double by Taylor, accompanied by
a C.Flood double moving Taylor to third. W.Davis sacrificed him home. Aaron doubles,
F.Howard walks, and P.Ward singles home Aaron. With a 5-2 lead, a game 7 seemed certain.
Manager Turnbull brings in closer A.Worthington to work the 9th. W.Mays leads off with a
double, White flies to center, Tresh singles bringing home White, Roseboro walks,
and Worthington walks Robinson to load the bases. Brinkman then strikes out for the
second out. Pinch-hitter W.Covington then singles in two along with an Aaron throwing
error to bring in one more to put the Mavs in the lead. They then add insult to injury by
adding 3 more runs with a double by Flood, a single by Weis, and a double by Mays to make it
9-5. Should Turnbull have pulled Maloney? We will never know. The Grays go 1-2-3 in the 9th
to give the Mavs their second consecutive SPB-1 title.

Willie Mays was namde Series MVP.
