SPB-1962 World Series

This year the World Series started earlier than expected due to Y2K testing
on something called computers, they apparently need 38 years to get it
right. Well, the players didn't mind getting to it sooner, so they could
get back to their farming and licquor store winter jobs.

It should also be noted that this is the first visit to the World Series
for the Hatteras Pelicans winners of 100 games during the regular season.
For the High Desert Mavericks it's their 2nd time, but that was back in
1956 when they upset and swept the powerful Frankfort Tigers that year.
This season the Mavericks reeled off 124 wins during the regular season to
earn their right to the World Series.

Game 1 opened in Yankee Stadium on a very cold, windy day. The temperature
at game time was 47 degrees with winds blowing out toward the monuments in
at a 13 MPH clip. The field was still damp from a light snow from the night
before. Okay, game 1 featured CY Young contenders Don Drysdale 30-7, 2.59
for the Pelicans and southpaw Whitey Ford 28-4, 2.86 for the Mavericks.
Scoring started in the 1st inning when Curt Flood Doubled to LF-CF and Gary
Geiger followed with an RBI single and the Mavs led 1-0. The Pelicans
responded quickly when Callison hit a ground rule double to RF, Don
Clendenon got a "gift" excuse me, infield hit to put runners on the
corners. Clete Boyer, who finds this stadium an interesting place, hit a
SAC to CF that tied the game up. Clendenon then stole 2nd base and rookie
Phenom, Ken Hubbs drilled a double to RF-CF and the Pelicans had silented
the home crowd by taking the 2-1 lead. In the 3rd inning with 2 outs and
nobody on, Willie Mays Doubled to LF,
and rookie of the year candidate Tom Tresh mashed a Don Drysdale pitch that
cleared the wall in RF
by 20 feet. Brooks Robinson, on the next pitch hit it way back and gone
over the LF wall and after 3 innings the Mavericks led 4-2. In the 5th
inning the Pelicans Vada Pinson lined a single to RF, Groat SAC put Pinson
on 2nd base, Tommy Davis smoked the ball to 3rd but Brooks Robinson
stretched toward the foul line and caught it and robbed Davis of an extra
base hit and RBI. Johnny Callison then got a broken bat infield hit that
put runners on the corners, but Clendenon grounded out to end the threat.
After the 5th inning Whitey Ford only gave up one more harmless hit and
game 1 was in the bank for the home team. Mavericks up 1 game to none in
the 1962 Series.

Game 2 was a beautiful day at the stadium with big puffy clouds and a
temperature of 57 degrees and the wind blowing some from RF to LF at about
6 mph. On the mound today for the visitors is the crafty lefty, Johnny
Podres 23-9, 2.88 who had a wonderful year with the Pelicans. Going against
him is Jim Bunning 22-9, 2.79 also a big year for the Mavericks. The
Mavericks hit lefties very well all season and hoped that it would continue
against one of the best in Podres. Pelicans were retired 1-2-3 in the 1st.
The Mavericks Flood doubled to start the game, and Mazeroski's single to CF
quickly brought in the 1st run of the game. In the 2nd inning, Lu Clinton
grounded out, Hobie Landrith
walked, and Jim Bunning hit it up the middle that Groat nabbed but had no
play. Curt Flood then
hit a grounder to Groat and forced Bunning, but Landrith scored, then
Mazeroski got a high changeup
hat he drilled down the line in LF that Tommy Davis jumped and couldn't
come down with it and the Mavericks led 4-0 after 2 innings. Things
continued in the 3rd with Tom Tresh's single up the middle,
and 2 outs later Lu Clinton blasted the ball over the LF wall and the lead
was 6-0. In the 4th Mazeroski had his 3rd hit a big triple to CF and scored
when Groat couldn't come up with a routine grounder to SS. It was now 7-0.
The 5th inning saw Francona hit by Bunning, Gomez SAC and Pinson singled to
RF to put the Pelicans on the board. That would be it as Jim Bunning hurls
a CG 4-hitter and the Mavericks and Pelicans get ready to travel to the
Hatteras for game 3, 4 and possibly 5. The Mavericks now lead the series 2
games to none.

Game 3 had similar weather as Forbes Field was all decked out for their
first World Series in years.
This game featured a couple very good pitchers this season. The Mavericks
sent Juan Pizarro 22-6, 3.19 out to face the veteran Robin Roberts 14-9,
3.58. Only one Pelican hit in the first 3 innings, but in the 4th Curt
Flood singled to LF and Gary Geiger again smacked the Roberts fastball over
the RF wall and the Mavericks grab a 2-0 lead. No more scoring until the
7th when the Pelicans Dick Groat
singles to CF, Tommy Davis singles to LF and Callison doubles to RF-CF that
plates Groat, but Mays
unloads it to Mazeroski who turns and throws a strike to Roseboro to nail
Davis, but the ball pops out and Davis is safe. Lamabe replaces Pizarro and
Clendenon F9 to end the inning with the score tied
2-2 after 7 innings. In the top of the 9th Flood walks, and Geiger singles,
and relief ace Face comes in to pitch for Hatteras. Bill White walks to
load them up with no one out, but Mays flies out to RF and Flood is coming
down the line and Callison throws a bee-bee to the plate and nails Flood
for the DP.
Tresh then K's on three pitches. Score still tied 2-2. In the 10th Brooks
Robinson grounds out to SS,
but the CM brings in Maxwell to PH for Mazeroski (something I would not
have done in this situation), anyway, Maxwell promptly hooks a triple down
the RF line, Roseboro K's for out #2, but D. Jones
PH's for the pitchers spot and hits a slow roller to SS that Groat bobbles
that allows the go-ahead run for the Mavericks to take the 3-2 lead. Bottom
of the 10th Baldschun gives up a one out walk, but the Pelicans can't
capitalize and the Mavericks now have a commanding 3 games to none lead in
the series.

Game 4 had weather similar to game one as it was a cold 47 degrees, but
with little wind and skies were clear. The capacity crowd were in good
spirits despite facing possible elimination. No brooms in site here in
Forbes Fields, but champagne chilled in the visitors locker room. Game 3
would feature
Cheney 10-7, 3.09 for the Mavericks and he would face veteran RHP Bob
Purkey 18-14, 3.77.
In the 1st inning with one out Geiger singled to RF, but was thrown out
trying to steal 2nd base. In the bottom half of the 1st, Pinson singled to
LF and stole 2nd, but was left stranded. Things stayed quiet
until the 4th inning when future NL President bill White finally woke up
and tripled to RF, Willie Mays, who clubbed 51 HR's during the regular
season, hit a deep blast to LF and the Mavericks led 2-0. The
Pelicans came right back in the 4th when Johnny Blanchard homered to RF to
cut the score in half 2-1.
In the 8th Pinson F8, Groat singled to LF but was thrown out by Gary
Geiger when Groat tried to stretch it into a double, Tommy Davis then
walked, Callison hit it to SS and Tresh couldn't find the handle, and
Blanchard doubles in one to tie the game 2-2. Lamabe came in and Clete
Boyer grounded out to SS. In the 10th facing Face, Gotay singles up the
middle, Roseboro trying to SAC, reaches first when Blanchard trips over his
cleats. PH D. Jones F8's and DP get's Pelicans out of the jam. In the
bottom of the 10th with Baldschun pitching Callison singles, Blanchard
forces him, but Boyer singles and Callison heads for third. With Francona
up Baldschun uncorks a WP and the Pelicans
avoid the sweep by coming from behind and beating the Mavericks 3-2 in 10
innings. The 1962 World Series now goes to game 5 with the Mavericks
leading 3 games to 1.

Game 5 is played under terrible conditions, but commissioner Plunkitt
refuses to postpone the game. He sat behind the home dugout for this game
and insisted that the umpires get this game moving. He felt with the 1963
draft just 5 months away, there was no time for delays now. In the
meantime, it was discovered that Cuba with the help of the USSR had
ballistic Missiles on the island that threatened Florida and other US
cities. The fear of WW III was looming greater by the day. Despite all
this, the game was played and starting for the Mavericks was Whitey Ford
winner of game 1 and he faced Don Drysdale loser of game 1. Curt Flood
opened with an infield single and Gary Geiger Homered for the 2nd time in
the series and Mavericks led 2-0. In the 3rd he had a 57 minute rain delay,
but the starters remained in the game. In the 5th 4 singles got the
Pelicans on the board. The 6th inning saw the Mavericks extend their lead
to 4-1 as Tresh tripled home a run and Mazeroski's ground out scored
another. In the bottom of the 7th Clete Boyer doubled to CF, Schmidt
walked, and Hubbs singled in one and PH Cook gorunded out that allowed
another run. The score now stood at 4-3 Mavericks after 7 innings. In the
9th with Baldschun pitching, PH Blanchard walks, PH Schofield walks, PH
Nixon singles to load the bases. Pinson then F9 with no advancement for the
1st out, but Groat hits a ringing single up the middle that plates the
tying run, but a dP ends the scoring. We are going "extra innings" for the
3rd straight game. Nothing in the 10th, but in the 11th all heck breaks
loose with one out Robinson singles, Roseboro walks, Flood singles home one
run, Geiger singles to load em up. White walks in one, and Mays singles in
2 more. The Mavericks end up scoring 5 in the inning and Joyce pitches a
scoreless 11th only giving up a single and the ballgame and the 1962 season
is over.
