Game 5: Although Bob Rhoads came back for his second start, all the pressure was on veteran ace Cy Young for the Maumees. And, as pitching matchups, this one did nothing to disappoint. For six whole innings it was a tight chess match, with sloppy moments, errors, passed balls, stolen bases, but no runs for either side. Then the ice broke. With one out in the 7th Jim Nealon reached on an error by shortstop John Godwin. Boss Schmidt allowed a passed ball, sending Nealon to third. Pinch hitter Ward lined out, scoring Nealon. Determined to even the score, Cy Young put in a ferocious at bat to start the inning, grounding a double down the first base line on the 12th pitch thown to him. Unfortunately, his teammates let him down: Tenney and Jones grounded out, and, after Hummel walked, Smoot grounded out to end the threat. Broadway forged another run in the 8th. After Wee Willie grounded out, Hans Lobert grounded a double down the first base line, and stole third on the first pitch to Strang. Strang then singled Lobert home, but Young bore down to retire the side. In the bottom of the 8th, Godwin singled with two out, but was caught stealing to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, again with two outs, Tenney singled, but was forced out to end the ball game and the series. Rhoads hung in for the shutout and was a candidate for series star with his two complete game victories and 0.50 era. Hans Wagner dominated the offense for the Bombers, hitting .389, and contributing two doubles, a triple and a home run. Sam Mertes, though he failed in the clutch, ended his career masterfully, hitting .350 with two triples. The team era for the Bombers in the series was an astonishing 1.68! Although Bender’s clutch performance in the third game was without peer, Pelty was the best pitcher in a heroic but futile attempt by the Toledo squad to win their first SPB-100 championship.
