Game 3: The Series shifts back to Toledo with the Maumees backs to the wall. Unsung veteran Bill Bernhard takes the mound for the Toledoans against Carl Lundgren of the Bombers. The Maumees escaped the 1st when Bernhard induced the Flying Dutchman to ground into a double play, then answered with a gritty inning against Lundgren. Lundgren walked the first two batters before striking out shortstop Bobby Wallace, then Homer Smoot, who announced his retirement after this series, delivered Davy Jones with a run-scoring single. Toledo went out in front 2-0 as Wallace drove in Jones. A ground ball out by Tommy Leach in the 4th allowed the Bombers to climb back into the game, then, in the 6th, Tommy Leach manipulated another ground ball, this time a sacrifice, to knock in the tying run. Broadway went ahead in the 7th, as 2b-man Sammy Strang knocked in Willie Keeler. Meanwhile Lungren hung in against Bernhard for the next few innings. Chief Bender came in for Bernhard in the 8th and proceeded to pitch gritty, if not flawless ball. Finally, Toledo managed to employ some scientific baseball of their own, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth. After Sam Mertes (who also announced his retirement) singled to lead off the inning. As Bill Bradley struck out, Mertes tore for 2nd and was safe, and was able to advance to 3rd on George Gibson’s errant throw. John Godwin’s ground ball enabled him to score, but Godwin was then caught stealing and Nig Clarke grounded out, sending the game into extra innings. Strang singled to start the 10th off Bender, but the Chief induced a double play to escape. An error by the normally sure-handed Bobby Wallace sent Nealon to 2nd in the top of the 11th with just one out, but Bender bore down on pinch-hitter Piggy Ward and Carl Lundgren to end the threat. The end came swiftly. Lundgren, barely holding his arm together, surrendered a lead-off single to Homer Smoot. Sam Mertes’s ground ball succeeded in moving him two second.
