Claim to fame:
(or better yet, favorite baseball memory): When my son Jason was about a year and a half old, we took him to a baseball game at Comiskey Park. Since the White Sox are clients of ours, we can occasionally get really good seats. This time we really lucked out. We got tickets right next to the White Sox dugout, literally next to the White Sox on-deck circle. It was very interesting to see how the players prepared themselves. Carlton Fisk, for example, was all business. He was completely focused on the pitcher every second he was on-deck. Most players were similar in their preperation. Ozzie Guillen, on the other hand, was on-deck, not to prepare for his at-bat, but to interact with the fans. He was constantly turning towards the stands talking to and waving at his family, friends and fans in general. During one of his times on-deck the Sox were rallying and the fans were really getting into it. The noise level was way up. This was great fun, but to a 1 1/2 year-old kid this kind of noise was something new. And not really much fun. Jason began to cry for all he's worth. To our great amazement, Ozzie turned around while in the on-deck circle and began to console our son! His words of encouragement
were not well understood, I'm sure, but they were probably appreciated in some way by Jason. However, his other consoling technique, poking Jason with his bat, had the opposite effect. Jason cried even harder. But this didn't phase Ozzie. Next thing we know Ozzie no longer is in the on-deck circle. We look around and can't find him. Shortly thereafter we see Ozzie coming back from the dugout, major league baseball in hand. He hands the baseball to Jason with a smile and strides to the plate for his at-bat. We still have that baseball, now with Ozzie Guillen's signature. Everytime Jason sees Ozzie Guillen these days he says, "He's the one who gave me the ball, right Dad?". And I say, "Yeah, that's right, Jason!" You see, Jason doesn't really remember that day at the ballpark. Who can remember anything from when they were a year old? What he remembers is the countless times I pointed out Ozzie Guillen, when Ozzie was batting, or fielding a groundball, or playing catch before a game. And everytime I pointed out Ozzie, I reminded Jason of that special day when he gave Jason the ball.
